Diversity/Parallelism Trade-Off in Distributed Systems With Redundancy

چکیده

Distributed computing enables parallel execution of smaller tasks that make up a large job. Its purpose is to reduce the job completion time. However, random fluctuations in task service times lead straggling with long times. Redundancy provides diversity allows when only subset redundant executed, thus removing dependency on tasks. Under constrained resources (here, fixed number parallel servers), increasing redundancy reduces available for parallelism. In this paper, we characterize diversity vs. parallelism trade-off and identify optimal strategy among replication, coding, splitting, which minimizes expected We consider three common time distributions establish models describe scaling these size. find different operate optimally at levels, requiring very code rates.

Trade-off between Redundancy and Feedback in Wireless Network Communication

Feedback is an important control mechanism that provides reliability in most wireless network protocols. However, feedback incurs some overhead, especially in lossy network environments. Many previous works on reliable communication neglect the cost of the feedback messages. In this paper, we study the problem of minimum-cost reliable transmission over error-prone wireless networks by consideri...

Diversity Multiplexing Trade-off in MIMO Systems

This report describes my method of increasing the capacity of any wireless network through the application of MIMO technology. The Shannon capacity of wireless networks has been calculated in different instances by MATLAB. Using Simulink, the various parameters of a wireless Rayleigh Multipath fading channel are calculated. This is done in order to experimentally prove the advantages of a MIMO ...

File Redundancy Issues in Distributed Database Systems

This paper treats the file redundancy issue in distributed database systems asking what is the optimal number of file copies, given the ratio r of the frequencies of query and update requests. To draw a general conclusion applicable to a wide variety of practical distributed database systems, simplified network models are constructed , and optimal number of file copies, as well as their locatio...

On the Speedup/Delay Trade-Off in Distributed Simulations

Assume a local simulator (LS) of a given system is available and we wish to turn it into a distributed simulator (DS). In the DS case, the LS is partitioned into segments called federates, each federate being run by a separate host. Before implementing the DS (i.e., at design-time) we wonder: will the DS execution time be shorter than LS one? In some cases the DS may run slower than the equival...

Performance and effectiveness trade-off for checkpointing in fault-tolerant distributed systems

Checkpointing has a crucial impact on systems' performance and fault tolerance effectiveness: excessive checkpointing results in performance degradation, while deficient checkpointing incurs expensive recovery. In distributed systems with independent checkpoint activities there is no easy way to determine checkpoint frequencies optimizing response time and fault tolerance costs at the same time...
